FTP for the Mac
“Accessing your Blizzard files from home!”
What is FTP (File Transfer Protocol)?
FTP is a method used to transfer files from one location to another over the Internet.
What will FTP allow me to do?
FTP will allow you to access your files saved on Blizzard while at home or on the road as long as you have an Internet connection. You may download files already located on Blizzard, or upload files that have been created while off campus.
Best Practices
When you need to remotely work on a file already located on Blizzard, it is best to connect to Blizzard, download the file to your computer, edit and save the file and upload it back to its original location on Blizzard. Do not attempt to open, edit and save the file directly to Blizzard.
Before you connect
Before you connect you must do only one (1) of the following
1. Allow communication on port 21 for any firewall currently running OR
2. Disable all firewalls running on your computer
How do I connect?
1. Download and Install the FREE FTP program Fetch from http://www.fetchsoftworks.com
2. Register Fetch using the following info:
Serial Number Name: Hopkins School
Serial Number: FETCHEX001-XRW8-BZLV-CTK4-HX5Q-JJC5
3. Open Fetch and enter the following information for your new connection:
Hostname: blizzard.hopkins.edu
Username: hopkins-school\yourusername
Connect Using: FTP
Password: yournetworkpassword
Choose “Connect”

Transferring Files
Once you have connected to Blizzard, double click the folders listed until you are in your working directory. To work on a file already saved on Blizzard, click and drag the file to your desktop from the Fetch window. You may then open the file, edit it and save it locally. To put it back on Blizzard, simply click and drag the icon on your desktop back to your Fetch window and let go. You may also use the “GET” and “PUT” buttons in Fetch to upload and download your files.
Troubleshooting
| If you are having trouble connecting to Blizzard make sure all firewalls have been successfully turned off or make sure communication on port 21 is being allowed. In addition, make sure you are entering your username and password as indicated above. | |
| When transferring files back to Blizzard you may be prompted to “overwrite” the previously downloaded file. You will need to say yes to this prompt in order to properly save your updated document. |
